Beethoven. Sonata Marathon

This unprecedented event for Ukraine, in terms of scale and cast, will be held on the 15th and 16th of May as part of the KharkivMusicFest-2021. All 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas will be performed within the two-day marathon.

Beethoven has been creating piano sonatas throughout his lifetime – the first ones have been written in his early youth, and the last one not long before his passing. They became part and parcel of every prominent piano players’ repertoire as early as two centuries ago. At the start of the 19th century, Franz Liszt, a virtuoso pianist, a prominent composer of the Romantic period, was the first one to perform Beethoven’s sonatas. Today, Ludwig van Beethoven’s 32 sonatas are considered an invaluable cultural legacy of all mankind.

On the 15th and 16th of May, top piano players from Ukraine, along with their German, Austrian and Israeli colleagues, will perform all of the piano pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven. Among the participants are following National Artists of Ukraine: Yuriy Kot (Kyiv), Josef Ermin (Lviv), Oksana Rapita (Kyiv); Honorary Artists of Ukraine: Myroslav Drahan (Lviv), Hennadiy Demyanchuk (Kyiv), Yevhen Rzhanov (Kyiv), Anna Sagalova (Kharkiv), Mariya Puhlyankok (Kyiv); laureates of international competitions: Dmytro Choni (Austria), Antony Baryshevskiy (Kyiv), Illia Ovcharenko (Israel), Roman Lopatynsky (Kyiv), Maksym Shadko (Kharkiv), among others.

Each marathon day will last from 9 AM to 10 PM daily and include concerts, as well as piano masterclasses. By purchasing a ticket for one day, visitors can choose the length of ‘music distance’ they are willing to cover themselves – how many events they are willing to attend. All participants of masterclasses will be rewarded with a Certificate of Attendance.

Please note that tickets for the Sonata Marathon held on the 15th and 16th of May are sold separately and are not interchangeable. They are only valid for the specific date, indicated on your ticket.
